Spotlight 2019-20: Sue Fuller

Sue Fuller

String Composition #W-253, 1984

Known for her abstract compositions made from thread and string, Sue Fuller (1914-2006) is one of the most collected woman sculptors in the McNay’s Collection. Inspired by the work of her father who designed bridges and her mother’s intricate needlework, Fuller started making her trademark string compositions in 1949.

String Composition #W-253
was commissioned specifically for the place where it hangs, the stairwell of the Tobin Theatre Arts Gallery. It was designed in sections and assembled in the space. A gift of Robert L.B. Tobin, the sculpture is a masterpiece of art and engineering.

Space Considerations

Many teachers ask about the size restrictions for Spotlight. This year, we ask that any projects larger than 6×6′ receive prior approval. The gallery space is shared and we hope to show as many student projects as possible. Smaller individual projects and group projects are preferred.

Major support for Spotlight is provided by Rackspace, Semmes Foundation, Inc., and Texas Commission for the Arts.
