Circa 1900: An Art and Humanities Resource

Circa 1900: An Art and Humanities Resource

A forthcoming online resource, Circa 1900 connects works from the turn of the century in the McNay’s collection with social studies curriculum with a focus on 6th grade. In this resource, teachers browse a collection of thematic units aligned with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

The McNay collection, particularly rich in works by both American and European artists from around 1900, provides the opportunity to address topics such as transatlantic exchanges, colonialism, effects of war, and industrialization. Virtually or in person, students engage with these primary sources that relate directly to their areas of study. Combined with other sources like letter excerpts, artifacts, and photos, the Circa 1900 units enable students to develop critical thinking skills, conduct research, analyze resources, and make judgments.

Become a Circa 1900 Teacher Fellow

The McNay is seeking educators to write social studies units for sixth graders that explore McNay works of art in depth. The honorarium per Circa 1900 Teacher Fellow is $300, paid in increments as assignments are completed, and a one-year McNay individual membership ($55 value).
