Still Life, Red by Gabriele Münter (Postcard)

Currently on view in the Frost Gallery

Observe thick black outlines, intense areas of color, and simple forms, all influences of the German folk tradition Hinterglasbilder, or painting on the back of glass. Bright stars and stripes of an American flag stand out among more traditional still life objects of fruits and flowers. Gabriele Münter probably acquired the flag during a trip she made, at the age of 20, to visit relatives in the United States, some in Marshall and Plainview, Texas.
