On the eve of International Women’s Day, Los Angeles–based artist, activist, and educator Judy Baca speaks about her work and her commitment to equity for all people in a presentation entitled Resistance and Affirmation. A natural leader, Baca has claimed space for women of color in both the feminist movement and the Chicano art movement since the 1970s. In 1974 she founded the first city of Los Angeles Mural Program; it continues today as SPARC (Social and Public Art Resource Center). Her work Las Tres Marias, 1976, was on view in the fall as part of Pop Amèrica, 1965–1975; her work Absolutely Chicana, 2008, will be on view in the exhibition Estampas Chicanas.
A collaboration of the McNay and the University of Texas at San Antonio, this lecture is a program of the Louis A. and Frances B. Wagner Lecture Series and the Mellon Undergraduate Humanities Pathways Program.
Space is limited. Fee (includes Museum admission): McNayMembers $15; nonmembers $25; educators, teens, and students $5.
Kick off International Women’s Day with Judy Baca at a meet-and-greet reception immediately following lecture. Join for #resistance cocktail, beer, or wine. Tickets: $15. Reception tickets are available for purchase at the museum front desk.
