Community Conversation: Teens and Remaking LGBTQ Identity

Based on interviews conducted at an LGBTQ youth drop-in center, Sociologist Mary Robertson wrote Growing up Queer: Kids and the Remaking of LGBTQ Identity. Aimed at youth and their families, this program, moderated by Robertson, recognizes the changing ways youth are identifying their genders and sexualities and the importance of support from family, friends, and schools.

Books signed by the author will be available for purchase in the Museum Store.

Panelists include:

Jeremiah Flores: Jeremiah Flores is a high school student who has been openly gay since the age of 11. Jeremiah faced a lot of ridicule in school for having two moms, but to him it didn’t make a difference—they were all one happy family. Though his moms are no longer together, Jeremiah still continues to face struggles, although he powers through them in spite of any negativity.


Grace Flores:
Grace is Jeremiah’s mother. She is openly bisexual and was married to a woman for 7 years. Grace is fully supportive of her son and his identity, and continues to support him to be the best person he can be.


Adam Sauceda:
Adam Sauceda is a licensed professional counselor who works with a diverse clientele. His main focus has been working with transgender and gender diverse children, adolescents, adults, and families. Mr. Sauceda strives to provide a safe space to explore gender expression and gender identity.


Grey Gamboa: 
Grey Gamboa is the Association of Art Museum Director’s Diversity Intern at the McNay Art Museum. This summer he has assisted with Transamerica/n: Gender, Identity, Appearance Today. Born and raised in San Antonio TX, he started his journey of gender identity and self-expression during high school in the Alamo City, and currently attends the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Radio, Television, and Film.
