Archival materials are primarily for staff use. Requests by outside researchers to visit the Archives are considered on an individual basis. Access to the Archives is by appointment only. Some materials in the Archives may be restricted by donors or the office of origin due to security issues, legal issues, or privacy issues. The Archives may also restrict access to material that is not arranged, is being processed, or is unusually rare or fragile. In some cases, copies may be substituted for originals with conservation issues.

The mission of the McNay Art Museum Archives is to support the goals of the Museum by maintaining an active institutional archives and records management program to ensure that vital records are preserved and to support the work of staff and meet the research needs of a diverse community. This is accomplished by identifying and systematically collecting, organizing, preserving, and providing access to the museum’s inactive organizational records of enduring value and to recommend policies and procedures for the creation, maintenance, and ultimate retention or disposition of museum records in all formats.
