Volunteer Opportunities

Docents

As a volunteer support group of the McNay Art Museum, the Docent Council provides opportunities for the public to enjoy and find meaning in works of art in the collection and special exhibitions. The Docent Council normally admits a class of trainees every other year. Basic training for new docents lasts about eight months and includes extensive reading, research assignments, tour observations, and mentoring with experienced docents. All docents attend eight to twelve continuing education sessions in the fall and Monday monthly sessions on special exhibitions.

A member of the Docent Council Board will call to answer questions. Application forms are mailed to candidates in January of those years that the Docent Council is accepting a class that will begin training in the fall.

Greeters

The McNay Greeters are volunteers who welcome visitors to the museum. Greeters provide information about the museum’s current exhibitions, family programs, and special events. A valuable resource to the McNay, new Greeter volunteers are always welcome.

Volunteer Council & Speakers Bureau

The Volunteer Council’s purpose is to develop an integrated volunteer structure that will increase the number of skilled volunteers, to enhance relationships with its membership base, and to recruit volunteers to support museum activities. Opportunities for volunteers include a speaker’s bureau, assistance with museum events, new member mentoring, communicating with members, and clerical assistance.
