Prints and Drawings
Formed as a complement to the museum’s paintings and sculptures, the McNay’s print collection is recognized nationally for its focus on the graphics of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as well as for the overall quality of its holdings. Particular areas of strength are nineteenth-century French and American prints, German Expressionist graphics, and American works on paper of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries—especially post-1960. Graphic media represented include works in relief, intaglio, lithography, screenprinting, drawings, pastels, and watercolors.
While Mrs. McNay’s founding bequest included a small number of prints, the museum began systematically acquiring prints to form a cohesive collection in 1960. The Friends of the McNay, founded in 1959, have provided funds to buy more than 500 of the museum’s best prints. Other individual donors, including Mary and Sylvan Lang, Jerry Lawson, Margaret Batts Tobin, and Robert L. B. Tobin, greatly enriched the collection with their gifts and bequests. Today, the collection exceeds 3,000 prints and 1,500 drawings, pastels, and watercolors.
