McNay Art Museum Presents

Two-part Exhibition from AT&T’s Corporate Art Collection

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (January 22, 2009) - Thanks to AT&T Inc.’s generosity, the McNay is pleased to present a two-part exhibition of AT&T’s collection of 20th- and 21st-century American art, February 11 – May 17.

The exhibition, with the overall title

American Concepts and Global Visions / Selections from the AT&T Collection, explores the breadth and range of the corporation’s art collection. A selection of nearly 100 works of art is divided in two parts: Contemporary Paintings and Sculpture and Masterworks of Photography

Contemporary Paintings and Sculpture

focuses on paintings, sculpture, and large-scale works on paper by leading figures of postwar art. Realism, representation, and figuration are presented side-by-side with abstraction, emphasizing AT&T’s broad collecting interests.

Among the numerous and diverse artists whose works are included in this survey are Lynda Benglis, Jim Dine, Janet Fish, Alex Katz, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Murray, Phillip Pearlstein, David Salle, and Frank Stella. Artists associated with Texas are well represented, including John Alexander, David Bates, Vernon Fisher, and James Surls, as well as San Antonio’s own César Martinez and Alberto Mijangos.

Masterworks of Photography includes classic black-and-white imagery, color photographs, and alternative approaches to the medium. For example, Barbara Kruger’s

lenticular photograph broaden traditional definitions of photography. The exhibition features images by historical figures such as Ansel Adams, Walker Evans, Lewis Hine, and Man Ray, as well as contemporary artists exploring the boundaries of photography including Kruger, Richard Prince, Sandy Skoglund, and Andy Warhol. Of particular note is a group of 10 early black-and-white photographs by 20th-century master Ansel Adams that gives viewers a deeper appreciation of this artist’s vision.

Connecting the World Through Art

American Concepts and Global Visions/Selections from the AT&T Collection

was organized by AT&T Inc. and the McNay Art Museum.

The McNay

Built by artist and educator Marion Koogler McNay in the 1920s, the Spanish Colonial Revival-style home opened as Texas’ first museum of modern art in 1954. Today more than 100,000 visitors a year enjoy works by 20th-century masters including Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. In June 2008, the museum opened the 45,000-square-foot Jane and Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions designed by internationally renowned French architect Jean-Paul Viguier. Nearly doubling the McNay’s exhibition space, the Stieren Center includes three separate outdoor galleries in the first sculpture garden in South Texas.
