Summer at the McNay

This summer, as we mark the fifth anniversary of the Jane & Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions, we are pleased to feature Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera, the first exhibition to document the important role that photography played in Norman Rockwell’s creative process. Organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum in the artist’s home town of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, the exhibition demonstrates how Rockwell, working with various photographers over his career, carefully staged and posed his cast of characters to arrive at the definitive, iconic American images for which he is justly famous. This is a rare opportunity to compare his paintings, drawings and magazine covers side by side with prints of his study photographs.

Concurrently the museum presents Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton’s America, an exhibition of prints and drawings by these renowned American Regionalists and their contemporaries. It perfectly complements the Rockwell exhibition and its focus on the lives of ordinary people. Completing the trio of new exhibitions opening in June is Printing Perfection: The Art of Beth Van Hoesen, a choice selection of works by the late Bay Area artist, drawn from a generous gift to the McNay. Like the Rockwell exhibition, this is a great opportunity to understand an artist’s process.

With the wealth of public programs that accompanies all our exhibitions, the McNay’s educational impact continues to grow. I hope you take full advantage of the extraordinary opportunities we provide to develop an understanding and appreciation of modern art, this summer and throughout the year.
