San Antonio Draws: A Survey of Contemporary Drawing February 2 – May 29, 2011
A survey of what contemporary San Antonio artists are doing with various drawing media today, this exhibition includes 30 drawings by 30 different artists. Curator of Prints and Drawings Lyle Williams has selected works to show a cross section of what different San Antonio artists are doing with drawing. In some cases, the artist questions the very meaning of the word “drawing” by combining digital technology and non-traditional materials.
The exhibition is also a chance for visitors to gain insight into the artist’s working and thought processes. Drawings, traditionally done with ink or graphite on bits of paper, are in many senses expendable. Since they are not expensive linen canvases or bronzes, the artist is freer to work out designs and concepts without worrying about the object’s permanence. An unacceptable drawing can easily be thrown away. Spontaneity and a lack of self-consciousness in drawings are therefore essential to our understanding of how an artist works. Participating artists include Leigh Anne Lester, Alex Rubio, Chris Sauter, James Smolleck, and Vincent Valdez
