Sandy Skoglund :The Cocktail Party

February 16 | May 8, 2011

For the 14th presentation in the ARTMATTERS series of works by contemporary artists, the McNay presents Sandy Skoglund’s surreal sculptural installation The Cocktail Party. Recently acquired for the McNay’s collection, the installation—accompanied by a large color photograph of the same title—re-creates a typical suburban American cocktail party using Cheez Doodles as surface material, the snack food that leaves its residue on everything that touches it. The photograph features human models while the installation presents only faceless mannequins dressed in cocktail attire and covered in fluorescent orange Cheez Doodles. A few of the installation’s mechanized figures perform repetitive movements. The Cocktail Party evokes decadence as Sandy Skoglund transforms reality into a garish dream world where mass-produced food products threaten to consume. An illustrated gallery guide accompanies the exhibition.
