Calder to Rauschenberg

Gifts of Jeanne and Irving Mathews

This fall the museum presents Calder to Rauschenberg, a showing from the varied collection of modern and contemporary art bequeathed to the McNay by Jeanne Lang Mathews from the collection formed over many years with her husband, Irving. This installation demonstrates the collection’s particular strength in sculpture and works on paper. Among the sculpture highlights are Alexander Calder’s bronze Snake, 1944, and the McNay’s first works by British sculptor Anthony Caro and Polish sculptor Magdalena Abakanowicz. Works on paper include drawings by Austrian Expressionist Egon Schiele and American sculptor and draftsman Richard Serra, also firsts for the McNay. Among the paintings is a rare Robert Rauschenberg Combine of 1958, Black Mail. Earlier gifts from the Mathews augment this presentation to demonstrate their wide-ranging taste and generosity to the museum over the years.
