Catherine Lee: Alice

The second in a series of long-term wall works presented in the McNay’s AT&T Lobby, Catherine Lee’s Alice is an expansive installation consisting of 105 red glazed raku ceramic elements and named for her mother. The ensemble, recalling archaic forms, symbolizes five generations of her family.

Costuming the Stage: Artists from the Tobin Collection

Costuming the Stage explores how designing for live theatre is different from designing for film. The exhibition focuses on drawings and costumes by several of the most important designers of the past half century, representing different approaches to costuming the stage. Featured artists include: Eugene Berman, Tanya Moiseiwitsch, Desmond Heeley, and Peter J. Hall. Costume drawings from the Tobin Collection are complimented by costumes borrowed from the Metropolitan Opera, the Stratford Festival, and other theatre and opera companies in North America.
This exhibition was organized by the McNay Art Museum and is a program of The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), a cross between Clement Moore’s poem and Hollywood horror movies, is a landmark in film animation. The Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts at the McNay includes a selection of about a dozen artifacts used in the making of the stop-action film including Jack Skellington’s tower; Lock, Shock and Barrel’s clubhouse; Oogie Boogie, and the One-Armed Bandits.

C. Thomas Wright: Patron and Collector

This presentation of works on paper is from the avid collector and longtime supporter of the McNay, San Antonian Tom Wright. For decades, Wright’s collection has developed alongside that of the museum. It, therefore, beautifully complements the McNay’s prints and drawings collection. The exhibition includes everything from nineteenth century works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Pierre Bonnard to contemporary print suites by Richard Tuttle and James Siena.

Regarding Ruscha

One of the masterpieces of the McNay’s post-1960 American print collection is an artist’s proof of Ed Ruscha’s iconic screenprint Standard Station, acquired by the Friends of the McNay in 1976. In 2012, the Friends made possible the purchase of Ruscha’s latest iteration of this classic image, Ghost Station, a molded paper print created at Mixografia in Los Angeles in 2011. This exhibition is our audience’s first opportunity to see these two works side-by-side. Joining the two Ruscha prints is a group of graphic works created by contemporary San Antonio artists in response to Ruscha’s enduring and distinctly American iconography.

CUT! Costume and the Cinema

Step into the exciting world of costume design through more than 40 period garments. Discover how clothing sets the scene and establishes authenticity in films. Perfectly crafted costumes uncover clues about a character’s status, age, class, and wealth, along with establishing the role in the story. The films represented in the exhibition depict five centuries of history, drama, and comedy with period costumes worn by film stars Sandra Bullock, Daniel Craig, Johnny Depp, Ralph Fiennes, Angelica Huston, Keira Knightley, Uma Thurman, Kate Winslet, and many others. In all, more than 30 actors from 27 films, including Sherlock Holmes; Academy Award winner The Duchess; and perennial favorites Pirates of the Caribbean, Sense and Sensibility, and The Phantom of the Opera, are featured.
The exhibition tour is organized by Exhibition Development Group, USA in cooperation with Cosprop, Ltd., London, England.

ARTMATTERS 15: Rosalyn Schwartz

The fifteenth presentation in the McNay’s series focusing on contemporary art, this exhibition brings together paintings, collages, and objects by Illinois-based Rosalyn Schwartz. Schwartz’s work finds inspiration in décor, interior design, and art history, juxtaposing representational and abstract imagery with decorative motifs and patterns, and often asking the viewer to consider questions of accepted style and personal taste. The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated gallery guide.
