One of the most exciting aspects of art is its power to mirror and bring meaning to our times. The boldly imagined works of Robert Indiana have never been more timely or evocative of our lives today. This fall, the McNay will proudly present—in a major collaboration with the Whitney Museum of American Art—the exhibition Robert Indiana: A Legacy of Love. It is our honor to invite you to join us on the Host Committee in support of the McNay’s tribute to Indiana, his Pop art contemporaries, and Robert Tobin and The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund.
Robert Indiana, running October 15, 2020 through January 24, 2021, examines Indiana’s art and innovative foregrounding of text and symbols within the visual arts during the postwar era. His use of words and images to form a complete message will be profoundly familiar in our current cultural moment with social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and more. The exhibition will also feature masterworks from the Whitney’s collection by Andy Warhol, Alex Katz, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, and Wayne Thiebaud. The exhibition—with treasured objects from the Tobin Theatre Arts Fund—will also provide fascinating insights into the enduring friendship between Indiana and Robert L. B. Tobin.
