Robert L. B. Tobin collected his first work of art at age 13 and became an avid collector of art, rare books, and theatre designs. He and his mother, Margaret, were actively involved in the McNay right from its founding in 1954. The Tobins’ dedication to the museum became obvious in 1984 when Margaret funded the Tobin Wing at the McNay Art Museum, in honor of her son Robert’s fiftieth birthday. Although Tobin served on the board of numerous cultural institutions, among them, MoMA, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Santa Fe Opera, he focused much of his attention on the McNay and continued to collect with the McNay in mind.
