Back to the Beginning

It’s a compelling and generous vision that has touched five generations of my family. As a boy I remember visiting Marion Koogler McNay’s magnificent home in Sunset Hills with my grandfather, Dr. John Herff, Mrs. McNay’s personal physician. Dutifully sitting on the wrought iron bench in her beautiful patio—and trying not to cause too much trouble while my grandfather checked on her—I could have never imagined that this tranquil oasis filled with great masterpieces would later transform into one of the nation’s most prestigious art museums.

While I never had the opportunity for art education during my school years, the McNay’s innovative programs have made it easy and enjoyable to appreciate the museum’s vast collection. As parents of four sons and 14 grandchildren, my wife Pat and I are proud to invite family and friends to visit the McNay to discover internationally renowned works by such artists as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Georgia O’Keeffe—all right here in the heart of San Antonio. A prominent leader in arts education, the McNay welcomes over 100,000 visitors annually, including 20,000 elementary, middle, high school, and university students. From free family days and special events to teacher workshops and distinguished lectures, generations of McNay visitors benefit from the museum’s lasting commitment to bringing the best of the visual arts to our city.

As a life-long museum member and chairman of the Board of Trustees, I am proud of our 53-year history of fiscal integrity as well as the museum’s leadership. Since its inception in 1954, the McNay has been guided by a dedicated Board of Trustees with a strong sense of mission and vision. In this issue of Build the future with us, we recognize the philanthropic leaders and museum members who have contributed to the McNay’s growing collection and education programs. Their generosity has also supported the expansion, restoration, and renovation of the McNay home. Because of their efforts, the McNay can now move forward with extraordinary plans that will bring national prominence to the museum and San Antonio.

Without a doubt, supporting the McNay is a tremendously rewarding experience.

Your commitment today can help maintain Mrs. McNay’s generous legacy and benefit generations to come. Step into a masterpiece, experience a treasure, build the future with us, and make a difference in the life of the community by investing in an irreplaceable San Antonio treasure—the McNay Art Museum.
